2013 World Rabies Day Event

2013 World Rabies Day Event

Sacramento, CA.   What do a 3-month-old calf pastured next door to an ice cream parlor in Rhode Island, a kitten born to a barn cat in Colorado, and Bluetick/Walker Coonhound mix puppies for sale in Oklahoma have in common?  This summer, all of these animals exposed numerous people to rabies.  In each case, post-exposure treatment was necessary for every person who had contact with the rabid animals.  The rabid animals either died or were euthanized.  This all could have been prevented if the animals had been protected by rabies vaccination.

Rabies in people and their pets is rare here in the U.S.A., primarily because of the pet licensing and rabies vaccination requirements in most counties.  Nevertheless, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports approximately 6,000 cases of rabies in animals within the U.S.A.

RRUFF Dog Park K-9 Agility Equipment-Grand Opening

RRUFF Dog Park served as the focal point for Cordell Firestone's Eagle Scout Project.  The project involved fundraising, designing, building, and installing K-9 agility equipment for both the small and the large dog areas.  The equipment includes window jumps, tunnels, dog-walks, tire courses, and an adjustable hurdle.  Many volunteer hours of community service went into this project.

Join the Grand Opening Celebration Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.  Special Award Ceremony at 10:30

Bring your dog and have fun on the new agility equipment.   Meet the Boy Scouts that built and installed the equipment and learn all about the RRUFF Dog Park, Rocklin  located inside Johnson-Springview Park at 5480-5th St Rocklin.  Visit the website at www.rruffdogpark.org for more information.

BloodSource Assists Patients and Pets this Summer

BloodSource Assists Patients and Pets this Summer

BloodSource is helping patients - and animal shelter pets - this summer by matching the number of blood drive participants with bags of food to be donated to Titanic’s Pantry, also known as the Sacramento Pet Food Bank*. Many of our blood donors have a soft spot in their hearts for abandoned pets and this is a novel way to help. Blood donors should refer to Donor Club #2127 when they donate blood at any BloodSource Donor Center or mobile blood drive from July 29 to August 4, 2013. Western Feed & Pet Supply has partnered to provide the bags of pet food at a discount.

The Midtown BloodSource Donor Center at 1608 Q. Street has partnered specifically with City of Sacramento Front Street Animal Services and Western Feed & Pet Supply to host a Bow-Meow Blood Drive on Tuesday, July 30, from 9:00 a.m.

Remember Pet Safety during the 4th of July

Remember Pet Safety during the 4th of July

County Animal Shelter wants your pets to remain happy and safe in their homes

Sacramento, Calif. – The Sacramento County Animal Care Facility reminds pet owners to plan ahead for the coming 4th of July holiday and keep dogs and cats safe in their own homes.

“Our stray animal population spikes during the 4th of July period. The fireworks stands are open and people celebrate early,” said Dave Dickinson, Animal Care Director. “Dogs and cats get scared and escape. Plan in advance to keep your pets calm and safe in their homes and avoid having to make a trip to the shelter to find your pet.”

Safety Tips:

Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays. You’re asking for trouble, as most pets have a very strong fear of loud, sudden noises which are like to evoke their “flight or fight mode.” Fireworks can cause true terror in a pet.
