ELK GROVE - On Saturday, March 26, California Family Fitness (CFF) and Going Green for Pink, a company dedicated to free recycling of old or unused electronics with the proceeds benefiting the fight to find a cure for breast cancer, will host four recycling events throughout the greater Sacramento area. The events are open to the community from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CFF’s Citrus Heights, Laguna, Natomas, and Folsom clubs. Red Cross to offer free training on Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life Saturday

SACRAMENTO, Tuesday, March 15, 2011 — The American Red Cross Capital Region Chapter will offer free CPR and first aid training on Saturday, March 19, as part of Gabrielle Giffords Honorary Save-a-Life Saturday. Red Cross chapters across the country will hold classes at more than 100 locations across the country to honor Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and all those involved in the Tucson tragedy.

Classes will be held at the Sunrise Mall, near the Macy's Men's and Home, starting every hour from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.. Training will last 45 minutes to one hour, and will include instruction in hands-only CPR, controlling external bleeding and managing shock. A complete list of communities participating in the event can be found on the event website at www.redcross.org/savealife.

A special training session for elected officials and local Red Cross leaders will start at 9 a.m.

100 year-old community volunteer Dora Tompkins honored by Assistance League®

We are thrilled to honor 100 year old Dora Tompkins of Citrus Heights as a valued community volunteer.  Mrs. Tompkins has volunteered countless hours over the last ten years by crocheting and knitting over 6,000 pieces of clothing and items for our Senior Friendship Program,” said Liz Stenstrom, President, Assistance League® of Sacramento.  President Stenstrom said that Mrs. Tompkins has positively touched the lives of thousands of infants and adults in the greater Sacramento area with her handicrafts for the last decade. 

President Stenstrom said, “We chose to recognize Dora Tompkins to highlight her lifetime accomplishments and to honor her as a valued community volunteer for the last 10 years.  She has proven to be a very prolific producer and we are impressed with the volume of work. She deserves our recognition for sharing her skills and her willingness to exert herself for the benefit of the community.” Mrs.

Junior League of Sacramento 6th annual crab feed

The Junior League of Sacramento is hosting the 6th Annual Crab Feed fundraiser Saturday, Feb. 5.  The event will have a denim and diamond theme.  Tickets are now available online at www.jlsac.org.  Tickets are $45 in advance and $50 at the door.  Early ticket purchases are strongly encouraged.  Reserved tables are also available.

Dinner will include Dungeness crab, pasta, salad, antipasto, bread, and dessert.  A no-host bar opens at 5:00p.m.

San Juan Unified selects 2011 classified employees of the Year

Five outstanding employees have been selected as San Juan Unified’s 2011 Classified School Employees of the Year. To recognize classified employees, the District accepted nominations for Classified Employees of the Year in the following six categories: child nutrition; maintenance and operations; office and technical; para-educator and instructional assistance; support services and security; and transportation.

All five of the Classified Employees of the Year will be recognized at the Feb. 8 Board meeting. They are also now eligible to be selected as one of Sacramento County’s Teachers of the Year. 

Starr King K-8 Head Custodian James Hutton has been a custodian in the District for 11 years and has been the head custodian at Starr King K-8 for one year.

“James is making a difference in the lives of our students and he has made a personal commitment to Starr King.
